The Real State of the Union with Jay Bookman and Dr. Lowery

Atlanta WAND (Women’s Action for New Directions) presents its 6th Annual Real State of the Union talk given by Jay Bookman with response provided by Dr. Joseph Lowery.

Atlanta, Georgia – January 29, 2008 - Jay Bookman, Deputy Editorial Editor with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution will be giving his annual talk on the “real” state of the union after which there will be a response from civil rights legend and convenor of the Georgia Coalition for the Peoples’ Agenda, Dr. Joseph E. Lowery. This year Jay's talk will consider the theme Chickens Coming Home to Roost. 

The event will take place at 7 pm on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Providence Missionary Baptist Church located at 2295 Benjamin E. Mays Drive, SW, Atlanta, Georgia 30311.

Atlanta WAND developed the Real State of the Union in 2003 in response to the lack of information being provided by the government and the media on the situation in Iraq, weapons of mass destruction, findings of UN inspectors, and diplomacy.  Atlanta WAND invited Jay Bookman to use his political insight and broad knowledge of history to reflect on the issues that have faced us each year as a country and as a community.

Each year the talk and response have covered a number of relevant topics. It has become more interesting, enlightening, and timely and with the state that our country is in as we move into the final stages of this current administration, we anticipate this year’s event will be even more interesting, enlightening, and timely.  The Real State of the Union has definitely become an anticipated event in the Metro Atlanta community.

A light reception will be hosted by Georgia for Democracy at 6 pm in the Fellowship Hall prior to the event.
